Childcare staff types explained

Nannies

Daily Nanny

A Daily Nanny will care for your children while you are at work or along side the mother if the post is shared care. Nannies duties would include preparing nutritious meals for the children, bathing and dressing. The nanny would also arrange social activities such as play dates, playgroup and outings to the park or zoo. She would help to develop the children through educational games such as puzzles, reading and painting. Nursery duties: the nanny is responsible for keeping the nursery tidy, organising the childrens belongings, tidying away toys after play and cleaning the kitchen after use.
Salary per week: London £350-£450 net. Rural: £230-£300 net.

Live in Nanny

A Live-in Nanny would normally work between 10-12 hours per day Monday to Friday with one to two nights baby-sitting included in her wage, weekends are free unless otherwise agreed beforehand. Her duties are the same as a daily nanny listed above.
Salary per week: London £290-380 net. Rural £220-£300 net

A Norland Nanny, Norland College was founded in 1892 and has a worldwide reputation for excellence. A Norland nanny’s duties would include those of a daily nanny as listed above.

Mother's Help

A Mother's Help will work alongside the mother with some sole care. Her duties are similar to a daily nanny, organising the nursery, dressing and bathing the children, preparing nutritious meals for the children, organising social activities and developing educational play.

Nanny/housekeeper

A Nanny/housekeeper will help with the running of the house, cooking, shopping and light housework as well as helping to take care of the children.

Maternity Nurse

A Maternity Nurse can live in up to 6 days a week, or work nights or days only. If you require, she can help with establishing a routine for your new baby, she will take care of baby clothes and equipment and the sterilisation of bottles. She will offer advice on sleep routines, breast feeding and bottle feeding. A Maternity nurse will take care of night feeds at this important stage.
Salary per week, between £600-£850 gross

Night Nanny

A Night Nanny will take care of your baby during the night so that you can catch up on sleep, whether you are breast or bottle feeding. The night nanny will settle the baby, prepare and sterilise bottles, give night feeds and give advice on getting your baby or older child into a sleep routine.
Salary per night, London and rural £85 gross

Doula

A Doula will have experience of being a mother and will support you during the birth of your baby or in the weeks immediately afterwards. A Doula can be any age from early twenties upward and is motherly, caring and supportive. Doulas work with you to help and support you through the birth of your child and if you require, will continue to work with you afterwards. You can have a Doula for a hospital birth or a home birth.
Salary per hour, £12 gross a minimum of four hours per booking
